People often ask me how long it takes to complete a piece and that is not always easy to answer. Before paint ever reaches canvas, there are hours of mulling over a concept, looking through pictures for reference elements and sketching designs. The actual drawing and painting time will depend on the size of the canvas and the complexity of the design.
All of my original works are painted by hand, using professional heavy body acrylics. Some of the early originals are inspired by artists whom have influenced me over the years: Angela Anderson, Cinnamon Cooney, Jane Font, Chuck Black, Clive Powell and John Magne Lisondra. The newer paintings are original designs mostly inspired by the beauty of New England.
Each work of art is a journey unto itself. In terms of saleable Fine Art, I try to complete at least one smaller piece each week but as I embrace this calling, I find I am drawn to spend more time on larger pieces that are more detailed. I often have several works in progress at a time.
Sometimes, the canvas has ideas of what it wants to be. The painting may begin as one thing and end as another. Those are the most fun. When that started happening, was when I felt confident in referring to myself as an Artist.
I do! Through the school year, you can find me once a month at the Hobby Lobby in Rochester, NH. I also facilitate beginner’s paint classes for private events such as Birthday Parties, Church Retreats, Nursing Home engagement activities and Girls Night Out. I’ve also been taking on private lessons from personal referrals of people I know.
The creative process is very much the same for my classes. However, I find it takes even more time as I must keep in mind a beginner skill level and limit the number of brushes that I use so that I have enough for my students. In a Fine Art painting, I may use 5-8 different brushes. In a painting designed for a Beginners Class, I try to keep it under 3 brushes.
